BMKG Mention That 62 Percent of Indonesian Territory Enter the Rainy Season

Rakyat Update. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) states that 62 percent of Indonesia's territory has entered the rainy season. In some areas rainfall is very high.

BMKG Deputy Climatology Herizal said high rainfall occurred in West Sumatra, Central Riau, western Jambi, Muko-muko, Pekanbaru, Kampar, Kerinci, Belitung, Cilacap, Semarang, Kapuas Hulu, Samarinda, Flores, Sorong, Nabire and Mimika ,

"Some regions get high rainfall (> 150 mm / dasarian)," Herizal said in a press release on Friday (12/14).

Increased rainfall has the potential to cause hydrometeorological disasters in most parts of Indonesia. According to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) during the mid-December 2018 a series of disasters have occurred, including: landslides, tornado and floods in several locations.

In November 2018, there were 72 flood events, 74 landslides, and 77 tornadoes.

Herizal said the highest rainfall was recorded in November at 400 mm which dropped in a day in Karang Nunggal, Tasikmalaya. While in December, the highest accumulation of rainfall reached 1,325 mm also in the same location.

Meanwhile, he said, for low category rainfall (0 - 50 mm / dasarian) occurred in central North Sumatra, north coast of West Java, DKI, Situbondo, Banyuwangi, most of Central Sulawesi, Bombana, Kolaka, Ambon, Kairatu, and Merauke.

Herizal appealed to the public to be aware of areas predicted to have high rainfall potential in the next 10 days, especially in flood-prone areas in most of Sumatra, Banten, parts of West Java, parts of Central Java, parts of Kalimantan, West Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, and a small part of Papua .

"A more detailed 10-day flood potential map has now been prepared by BMKG in collaboration with the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) and the Director General of Water Resources (DJSDA-PU)," he said.
